What is your God?
So many people that I have worked with over the years talked about how they can’t accept the God that is illustrated in the Bible. They refer to the stories where God is depicted as doing horrible things to people. For instance, they can’t accept a God that wiped out an entire civilization.
I suggest that rather than seeing the Bible as the image of God, our image of God decides the way we read the Bible. If we see God as wrathful and destructive and we read the stories that depict those kinds of events, that is how we will interpret the passages. But, if we have a God of love, then we will see a deeper meaning the different stories. We will understand that the stories are not meant to be taken factual but represent the view of the writer at the time and the different aspects of life. We will see our story embedded in the Bible story.
Try it. Read a passage that has been problematic for you. When you feel yourself getting anxious, go into your heart and ask the Spirit of Love to reveal a deeper meaning to you. Then read it again and see what comes for you. Then let me know how it goes.
