Turn UP the Volume on your Desire

Turn UP the Volume on your Desire

There is a great story in the first chapter of Think and Grow Rich about a man named, Edwin C. Barnes. Edwin C. Barnes had a dream to work as a business partner with Thomas Edison back at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Now, he had no qualifications to speak of, to fulfill this dream and he lived thousand of miles away from Edison.

Yet, he had a BURNING DESIRE! So, he did what he could with what he had where he was. He rode a freight train to Orange, New Jersey, knocked on Edison’s door and made his proclamation about becoming Edison’s business partner.

Now, think about it. This guy just got off of a freight train when there were no gas stations in which to freshen himself. He just knocked on Edison’s door, stinky, dirty, disheveled, but in love with the dream of becoming Edison’s business partner.

Later on, Hill reported how Edison stated that he saw something in this guy. He saw that Barnes really saw himself as Edison’s partner in that moment. Barnes did not wait for it to happen. He saw himself as Edison’s partner so clearly the day he arrived on Edison’s doorstep that he caused Edison to see enough of something to offer him a job.

Because of the image that Barnes had of himself before the actual fact, Edison decided to put Barnes to work, not as a partner but as the guy sweeping the floors. Months went by without anything happening. Hill reports that not only did Barnes not get discourage but that his desire intensified. He kept seeing himself as Edison’s partner.

The story goes on that there was a sequence of events that gave Barnes an unlikely opportunity with something that looked it was dead in the water before it got started.

Barnes saw it as his opportunity, jumped on it and became Edison’s incredibly successful PARTNER.

This story is just so packed with a pattern of success. But the thing I want to point out for all of us is how Barnes intensified his desire in the appearance of things not working in his favor. Not only did Barnes did not get discouraged, but his desire intensified!

Ask yourself as you take steps toward your dream today, “Am I allowing circumstances to intensify or deplete my desire?” This is important because the degree of your desire determines the degree of your belief and action toward your dream.

As you go through your day and you feel yourself getting discouraged that things may not be going the way you would like them, bring to mind Edwin C. Barnes and asked yourself how you can turn up the volume on your desire for your dream. Pull out the paper with your written dream, read it over, imaginally see yourself living this life and declare in this moment that it is yours. Let yourself desire it with once of your being and then ask, “What is one action I can take in the direction of my dreams?” Then take it.

Tell yourself that if Edwin C. Barnes, a tramp right off of a freight train can become a business partner of Edison’s, then absolutely your dream is possible!

Here’s to living the life you love!
