Think and Grow Rich

Think and Grow Rich

I started studying Napoleon Hill’s classic work Think and Grow Rich as I prepare for a teleconference class I am offering in May. At first, I struggled with developing what he calls a “burning desire” for money. In the past, I have grappled with the idea of having my own personal wealth. Somehow, it just seemed wrong-selfish, greedy-all of those negative connotations.  But, then I read a line that generated one of those lightbulb moments. Hill says, “Every individual who reaches the age of understanding the purpose of money, wishes for it.”  He is telling us here that money has a good and honorable purpose. For some of you, this may be old news. But for me, it opened a whole new world of possibilities and meaning.

So, what is the purpose of money? The first thing that comes into mind is freedom. The purpose of money is to give each one of us the opportunity to live freely. That will mean something different to each one of us. To me, it means the freedom to give of my gifts in a way that I love and makes a real impact. It means the freedom to spend time with the people I love. It means the freedom to contribute to the causes and organizations and people that I value deeply. It means surrounding myself with beauty, doing the things that I enjoy and that grow me as a person. Freedom means being able to focus on what really matters without worrying about how my needs will be meant. And this is all done in a way that honors and affirms life.

Bill and Melinda Gates give us a wonderful example of  a couple that understands the purpose of money. They use their money to create a good life for themselves while making real difference in the world. They show us all how to live abundant meaningful lives where money is simply a tool that supports and assists us with living our definition of freedom. This same opportunity is available to all of us as we learn the true purpose of money and consequently develop a desire for it.  Join me for one of my teleconference classes in May as together we will discover the true purpose of money and open ourselves to the flow of the infinite riches of the Universe.
