There Goes My Ego Again: 5 Questions to Ask to Know if it is Your Ego or Inspiration

You have an idea. It is something you really want. But when you think about it there is a part of you that says it is just your ego talking. Your idea or dream seems so grandiose. Then you hear the words, “Who do you think you are to think you could have that? This must be my ego.” How do you know whether it is your ego talking or the voice of Divine Inspiration speaking when it comes to your desire? Here are 5 questions to test that desire. My mentor, Mary Morrissey, developed these questions to help in just this kind of situation and it is my joy to share them with you now.

Ask Yourself These 5 Questions to Determine Who is Talking–Your Ego or Spirit?

Question 1–Does it give me life?

The voice of ego will cause you to contract. When you are listening to the voice of Inspired Insight, you can feel your whole system come alive. Remember that Spirit expresses by means of you. The more you live a life you love, the more you are truly living on purpose and not around your ego. So… when you think about your desire do you come alive inside?

Question 2–Does it align with my core values?

Think about the things that are important to you. Does your desire support you into living into your core values? Sometimes it can seem as though values conflict with one another. Realize that the Universe will never ask you to do something at the expense of something else that is important to you. Often it can feel like ego if your desire is going to impact someone else. When this happens, cause yourself to get bigger than the apparent conflict. There is a power in you that knows all things. The other piece to know with this is that there is no private good. What is good for you is good for everyone.  

Question 3–Do I need help from a higher power?

The purpose of your dream is to grow you. If you know you need help, then it’s not your ego. It is that in you that is seeking a richer, deeper connection to the Source of all life. Remember the source of your desire. It is a gift from the Source of life itself seeking a deeper connection to you. So often we think we have a prayer to God. That desire in you is actually God’s prayer to you to know this power more and allow It to have greater access to your life.

Question 4–Will it cause me to grow?

If you know how to do your dream, then it is not big enough. You know how to do your current life brilliantly. You don’t know how to do your dream life. The very act of reaching for something beyond anything you have ever done is an act of humility. You are acknowledging that you don’t know how to do it. You also become willing to be a beginner, which means you are willing to do new things awkward, uncomfortable and even afraid at times. There is no way that someone who is highly invested in looking good or living from ego is willing to do this.

Question 5–Is there some good in this for others?

Remember that this desire is not only for you, but as you live into it, it is the way you bring your gift to the people and world around you. Your true desire is the way that Life invites you to discover just who you really are and to realize the brilliance that you have to offer. As you live into your dream, whether it is for greater health or richer relationships, more meaningful work or more freedom in your checkbook and on your calendar, you grow. You become happier and more fulfilled. Ask yourself, who will this dream impact as I live into it? You begin to see the reverberation of your dream as it impacts those you can see and those who are way beyond your view. Nevertheless, the ripple effect of you living your dream is indescribable.

Summary

You have this desire. When you think about it, you come alive–yet there is still this nagging question as to whether it is your ego or truly Divine Inspiration. Put it to the test and if you answer yes to these 5 questions, go for it, as the world is praying for you to live your dream!
