I had Dinner with Stedman Graham

I had dinner with Stedman Graham, Oprah’s partner, this past Saturday night.

Here’s what happened and why this matters to you.

I was attending the eWomen Network Conference in Dallas, TX this past weekend. Every year, Sandra has a foundation dinner for those who contribute at a certain level to her charity. It is a charity that I believe in and support.

But this time, when Sandra announced that the special guest was Stedman Graham, there was a part of me that literally shrunk and said, “There is no way I can go to that dinner. I wouldn’t know what to say or even ask the man. I just don’t belong at that table.”

I am grateful for the depth of work I have done to recognize the voice. I knew immediately, because of that voice, I needed to be at that dinner.

The very reason for me not to do it became my reason to do it.

I KNEW that in order to claim my next level of my dream, I had to start seeing myself at my next level and act accordingly.

I had to take my place at the table.

Remember, we will never outperform the way we see ourselves.

Here’s the really fascinating thing about this whole story. Stedman, (and yes, we were on a first name basis) shared so openly and generously how he struggles with his identity as his own person being Oprah’s partner, the woman who just goes by one name. Because of his relationship with Oprah, his entire work is centered around helping people discover and OWN who they are so they can have choice and contribution.

Where are you turning down a seat at the table?

As you think about your dream, ask yourself, “What is my dream asking me to claim about myself? What new identity is seeking to come through? What new table am I being asked to take a seat at that has a chair waiting for me? Where have I shrunk because who I am today can’t see myself in that way?”

Then CLAIM that about yourself! Take a seat at the table of your dream. Realize that as you do, you bring your highest contribution to everyone around you.
