“Blessed are the meek”
This is one of those statements made by Jesus that make us squirm. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Meek is not a word we particularly like. It feels weak and ineffective. It is also not a word that we normally associate with Jesus. Some of the synonyms listed for meek are “listless, submissive, spineless.” So, why would Jesus make such a statement? Because he knew that in order for us to submit ourselves to the presence of spirit, we have to take on a meek or submissive demeanor. It is another way of saying ‘blessed are the poor in spirit.” Humility and submitting ourselves to God seem to be a theme for him.
We get in our own way. We think we have the answers and we know what is best and forge forward like a bull in a china shop. Our certainty and arrogance drown out the voice of God. As a result, we miss the peace and beauty that resides only in the quiet of Spirit. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are those who are willing to quiet their own voices in order to hear and see the Kingdom of Heaven within and all around.
